June 2010
The dog days of summer are here

Does it feel like you could fry an egg on the sidewalk? Welcome to summer. The only problem is - it's not summer yet and the humidex is soaring already.
Most workplace hazards are obvious; you look around and you see them. Some hazards are not so obvious - like heat stress. The REGIONAL reminds you of this much-ignored workplace hazard and offers information on how to protect workers from heat stress.
In addition, we provide you with the document you need to post along with the copy of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, remind you that the HST kicks in on July 1, and list out our upcoming training courses.

Don't let the heat stress you out

You've been diligent in protecting your workers from injury and illness at the workplace. Your firm's health & safey representatives periodically assess all hazards that may be present and take corrective measures. But with the onset of summer there's one more hazard that workplaces need to consider - HEAT STRESS.
What is heat stress? How does it manifest itself? What can employers and supervisors do to protect workers from heat stress?
OSSA has all the information you need in one place.

Starting June 15, it won't be enough for businesses to only post a copy of the Occupational Health & Safety Act. It is mandatory to also post the amendment related to workplace violence and harassment.
If your workplace has a 2010 version posted you've probably got the version with the amendment included. However, if you have a 2009 or earlier version of the Act then click here to download and print the amendment. And remember to post it along with the copy of the Act.
Go to our web page for other resources on workplace violence and harassment.
Come July 1st and OSSA will be required to include the additional 8% for product orders. So if you plan to purchase any OSSA products in the near future you might just want to consider advancing that purchase to on or before June 30 and save the 8%.

That the Occupational Health and Safety Act looks at job function and not just the title (i.e. manager) when determining responsibilities under the Act.
